Donald Shuler

From West Coast to East, Don Shuler has proven himself an outstanding wrestler and coach for forty years. After high school, he wrestled first at Santa Ana Junior College for Coach Frank Addleman. While there from 1973 to 1975, he won the California Junior College State Championship. This success prepared him for three years at one of the best programs in the country: Bobby Douglas' at Arizona State. He was an exceptional wrestler for the Sun Devils, achieving All-American status at 177 lbs. in 1978. Not content to rest on these laurels, Don, with his wife Robin, then joined the Athletes in Action wrestling team in 1979, during which he won a Freestyle National Championship and was named first alternate on the 1984 Olympic team at 180.5 lbs. Don began his coaching career in 1986 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. It was a successful tenure: he had seven All-Americans and Liberty's first Division II national champion. Despite an upgrade to Division I competition, his teams finished 32nd and 41st at the NCAAs and accumulated a dual-meet record of 189-100-5 in his nine seasons. Staying local, Coach Shuler then reversed the usual order of successful coaches and went next to the high school level, where from 1996 to today, he has maintained the excellence of Brookville HS, in particular their 44 consecutive years as Seminole District wrestling champions. His long and distinguished career has been attracting honors of late: he was recognized as Virginia's Coach of the Year in 2012, and he will be inducted this year into the Halls of Fame for two states, California, for his wrestling career, and Virginia, for his Lifetime Service. Don and his wife Robin have lived in Lynchburg for the past 28 years. They have three sons, one grandson, and three beautiful grand-daughters.
