Donald Shuler

From West Coast to East Coast, Don Shuler has proven himself an outstanding wrestler and coach for 40 years.

After high school, he wrestled at Santa Ana Junior College for coach Frank Addleman from 1973 to 1975 and won the California Junior College State Championship.

This success prepared him for three years at one of the best programs in the country, Arizona State University coached by National Wrestling Hall of Fame Distinguished Member Bobby Douglas. Shuler was an exceptional wrestler for the Sun Devils, achieving All-American status at 177 pounds in 1978.

Not content to rest on these laurels, Don, with his wife Robin, joined the Athletes in Action wrestling team in 1979. Shuler won a Freestyle National Championship and was named first alternate on the 1984 Olympic team at 180.5 pounds.

Shuler began his coaching career in 1986 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. It was a successful tenure with seven All-Americans and Liberty's first NCAA Division II national champion. Despite an upgrade to NCAA Division I, his teams finished 32nd and 41st at the NCAA tournament and had a 189-100-5 dual record in nine seasons.

Staying local and reversing the usual order of coaching, Schuler went to Brookville High School in 1996. He has continued Brookville's success, including 44 consecutive years as Seminole District wrestling champions.

Shuler was named Virginia Coach of the Year in 2012 and was honored by the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for Lifetime Service and the California Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2013.

Don and his wife, Robin, have lived in Lynchburg for the past 28 years. They have three sons, one grandson, and three beautiful granddaughters.
