William Savoy

Coach William Sidney (Sid) Savoy has taught and coached wrestling for 38 years at one place: Oscar Smith High School of South Norfolk and (since 1994) Chesapeake, VA. In high school, he played football and wrestled for Cradock High School, graduating in 1970. He then left for South Carolina State University, where he played football, wrestled, and swam. Returning to Virginia, he began in 1975 his "first and only job" at Oscar Smith, as a teacher, assistant football coach (for 22 years), and head wrestling coach. Helped by longtime assistant Ray Collins, he built a solid wrestling program that featured multiple state champion Reggie Burke as well as numerous district and regional champions. Not the least part of his success was his ability to plan events; he is particularly well-known as host of many AAA state tournaments. He's also proud of his pioneering the participation of females in Virginia high school wrestling. The record he has compiled for the Tigers is astonishing: a dual-meet tally of 552-242-1 in historically the toughest wrestling area, year in and year out, in Virginia. Not surprisingly, honors are coming his way: he has been recognized as Teacher and Coach of the Year; in addition to tonight's induction, he has been enshrined in the Oscar Smith High School Hall of Fame; and he has had the wrestling room named after him. Coach Savoy thanks many people for their love and support. "God blessed me with two loving and understanding wives, Debbie and Lynne, three fantastic children, Amber, Sarah, and Chip, two great sons-in-law, Dale and Aron, and two wonderful grandsons, Isaiah and Kai." One of his best wrestlers, Louis Johnson, sums up best the extraordinary contribution of his coach: "Coach Savoy is a man of wisdom. I'll always carry a piece of him."
