Rick Armstrong

Rick Armstrong and his wife Virginia (Ginny) are the proud parents of two sons, Jake (30) and Luke (28). When Rick retired from his teaching/coaching duties at Walton High School, he and his wife moved to Binghamton, New York, where they presently reside. Rick's athletic career began at Whitney Point High School where he excelled in football, wrestling and track. His wrestling participation was under the tutelage of Coach Frank Snyder. Rick compiled a 68-6-0 varsity record. He was Windsor Christmas Tournament Champion in 1973, Susquenango League Champion 1974, Section IV Class A Champion (Most Outstanding Wrestler) 1974, Section IV Champion 1974 and New York State Champion 1974. Following high school, Rick attended Cortland State where he continued to excel in wrestling. He compiled a varsity record of 88-21-4. Included among his wrestling honors were: All-State Wrestling Team 1976 & 1977, two-time New York State West All-Star 1978 & 1979, three-time SUNYAC Champion 1977, 1978 & 1979, three-Time NCAA Division III All-American, RIT Individual Champion 1979, Beta Sports King Award 1979 and NCAA Division III National Champion 1978. Rick began his coaching career at Attica High School where he turned in an 8-5-1 record in 1979-80. In 1981-82 he served as assistant coach at Walton High School. The following year he took over as varsity coach and began a long, illustrious coaching career that ended in 2011 with his retirement. Rick produced a 242-125-5 record at Walton. They were league divisional champions five times and Susquenango tournament champions in 1986 and 1998. They were also Mid-State Conference Division Champions in 2009. Rick's Walton wrestlers have won many honors. He has produced 308 individual tournament champions, 32 League Tournament Champions, 56 Section IV Class Tournament Champions, 12 Section IV Champions, 9 NY State Tournament Place-winners, 4 NY State Tournament Finalists and one New York State Champion. Besides coaching duties, Rick has for many years been the Chairman of Section IV wrestling and an active wrestling official. Rick has been very active with the Section IV Wrestling Official's Association. He has officiated at the Oxford Clyde Cole Wrestling Tournament and the Windsor Christmas Wrestling Tournament, two of the oldest tournaments in the state. The New York State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Rick Armstrong by inducting him into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
