Wayne Ferguson

Wayne Ferguson and his wife JoAnn reside in scenic Beaver Falls, New York, where they raised their four children: James (22), Jordan (23), Justin (33) and Leslie (35). From 1973 until 2007, Wayne served as varsity wrestling coach at Beaver River High School. Wayne attended Ithaca College from 1969-1973 where he compiled a 64-21-5 varsity record. He was team captain, 1971-73. He was ICAC League Champion in 1971. He competed in two National Championship Tournaments. After graduating from Ithaca College in 1973, Wayne began his teaching and coaching career at Beaver River High School. Together with former Beaver River wrestler Steve Duffer as his assistant coach, they led one of the most successful wrestling programs in Section III and New York State for over 25 years. The Beaver River teams were perennially state-ranked and a regular participant in the Section III Dual Meet Tournament. The Beavers always produced a winning dual meet record and they won over 100 tournament titles under coach Ferguson's guidance. Coach Ferguson's team were always well-coached in technique, strategy, sportsmanship and fair play. In his 33 year coaching career, his teams have achieved many significant accomplishments: 28 Frontier League divisional titles, 18 Frontier League Tournament titles, 10 consecutive Section III Class team titles 1984-93, 22 Section III Class team championships, a 73 dual meet match win streak 1982-1988, a 39 dual meet match win streak 1976-1979, 103 tournament team championships, 500 dual meet victories 1974-2007, 1997 Section III dual meet champion, 2006 Section III Division II team champion, 2002-03 #1 state-ranking in NYS Sportswriters' Poll-Small Schools, eight scholar-athlete teams and seven undefeated dual meet seasons. Coach Ferguson has guided 31 Section III interclass Champions, 23 New York State place-winners, six New York State runner-ups, two New York State champions and one high school All-American. Six former Beaver River wrestlers have gone on to achieve All-American status at the collegiate level. The New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Wayne Ferguson by inducting him into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
