Neal Aubel

Neal Aubel and his wife Linda live in Lowville, New York, where they raised two children, Michael (42) and Holly (40). Lowville is Neal's hometown. Following graduation from Lowville Academy and Central School, Neal Aubel attended SUNY Cortland where he was a member of the wrestling team. In 1964, following graduation from SUNY Cortland, Neal began his teaching career at Frankfort-Schuyler High School. The following year he accepted a physical education position at his alma mater, Lowville Academy and Central School. He held this position through his retirement in June of 1999. During this time he was also head wrestling coach and continued to coach until 2002. Neal served on the Section III Wrestling Committee since 1970. He assumed the chairperson position in 1993. He took over the reigns as the Frontier League chairman in 1972 and continued in that position until 1993. During that period of time he hosted many of the tough Frontier League Tournaments. Anyone competing in or attending those events knew they were the gold standard that wrestling tournaments could be measured by "” a class act from start to finish. Neal was a leading proponent of the Section III Dual Meet Tournament concept, and helped implement that tournament in 1989. Neal's wrestling teams have captured sixteen Frontier League titles, fifteen Section III Class Tournament titles and five Section III Inter-class Tournament titles. They produced a record-setting 465-80-5 dual meet record. Neal served almost twenty years on the Frontier League Executive Committee. He received the Section III Service Award in 1990 and was selected National High School Athletic Coaches Association Region I "Coach of the Year" in 1993. Coach Aubel was selected by his peers as the recipient of the 2001 New York State Administrators Section III Outstanding Service Award. Coach Aubel's teams have many additional accomplishments: 18 wrestlers with 100 plus wins, many former wrestlers now coaching wrestling, five Section III Inter-class Tournament Championships, one (tie) Section III Dual Meet Tournament Championship, 37 Individual Tournament Championships with 200 individual champions, 11 Frontier League Tournament Championships with 77 individual champions and 15 Section III Class Tournament Championships with 99 individual champions. For his many years of dedication to the sport of wrestling, the New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Neal Aubel by inducting him into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
