Alfred Feuz
Al Feuz was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1944. When he was five years old he moved to the town of Ashton, New York, with his parents. He was a 1962 graduate of Springville-Griffith Institute where he was a member of the wrestling team. He earned an associate's degree from Morrisville Technical College in 1965 and graduated from Brockport State College in 1967. At the time of his death in June 2010, Al lived with his wife, JoAnn, and.their two daughters Lisa and Connie in Springville, New York. Al was a chemist. He worked in general testing for DRS in Francher , for several years, then took a position in 1982 at West Valley Demonstration Project in Ashford, where he was a lab technician and laboratory supervisor. He retired in 2006. After college Al began his career as a referee by working Section V meets in the Rochester area. He continued as a Section VI referee and scorekeeper after he moved back to Springville. From the time he started officiating in 1966 until his death in 2010, Al Feuz was involved in wrestling. He truly produced a lifetime of service to the sport. He joined the Wrestling Officials Association of Section V in 1966 and soon earned respect for his wrestling knowledge, hard work, and dedication. As a member and later as president, he contributed a lot to the organization and to wrestling. Because of a change in his job location, he later transferred to the Niagara Official's chapter. Al became involved in freestyle and greco-roman early in his officiating career. While working with Sam Williams and other officials from the Buffalo area, he began to use colored armbands to designate the wrestlers and brought the idea of red and green armbands to the Section V area where the officials embraced it. Before long all New York State high school wrestling officials were using them and, eventually, the National High School Federation adopted the red and greed arm bands. Others may have initiated the idea, but Al was the one who really helped spread it across New York State. Al officiated the NYS Wrestling Tournament five times. He represented Section V in 1979, and then represented Section VI in 1983, 1984, 1988, and 1991. He officiated New York's Empire State Games from 1985-2008. He was the NY State Tournament computer scorer in Buffalo (2004), Albany (2005), and Nassau (2006). He was well known and respected in the wrestling community and his services were in great demand every weekend of wrestling season. He was honored to work many collegiate events including the Ithaca College Invitational (2009), Cornell Body Bar Invitational (2009), RIT Invitational (2009), Southern Scuffle (2009), NCCC Invitational (2010), NYS Collegiate Championship (2010), and CAA Championship at Rider College (2010). It should be no secret that Al played a vital role in the operation of wrestling tournaments across New York and was considered by some one of the finest "bracket pairers" in the sport. One of the most impressive things about Al was how he would show up at a tournament he was not scheduled to work, just so he could volunteer to help out any way he could. Frequently this involved driving hours away while paying his own way. Whether it was refereeing, operating a clock, or scoring bout sheets, Al would happily do it and not expect anything in return. The New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is please to recognized the accomplishments of Al Feuz by inducting him into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
