Roy Hunt

Even before graduating from high school in Bath, New York, Roy Hunt was bitten by by the teaching and coaching "bug." This was largely due to the influence of his coaches and his athletic participation at Bath. He attended SUNY Brockport majoring in Health and Physical Education, graduating in 1962. Roy earned his MS Degree in Health and Physical Education from Temple University. He taught in the Philadelphia school system from 1963-65. During his time in Philadelphia, Roy supervised wrestling at the Central Branch YMCA and coached a wrestling club at his school. Returning to his rural roots to teach and coach, Roy accepted a Health and Physical Education position at Sandy Creek School in Section Three in 1965. He started the wrestling program at Sandy Creek in 1965 also. In 1968 he earned his administrative certificate from SUNY Cortland. He served as Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics, teacher, and coach until he retired in 1996. Roy's athletic teams won several league and sectional championships in volleyball, baseball, and wrestling. His wrestling teams enjoyed great success during the '70's and '80's, compiling a dual meet record of 150 wins and 60 losses, producing 46 class D champions, and two state qualifiers. Sandy Creek was the most feared small school in Section Three wrestling. Roy also teamed up with Coach Steve Jackowski of South Jefferson High School in 1969-70 to convince the Section Three Wrestling Committee to institute a four class system in wrestling making competition more equal. That system is still used today. Roy had several wrestling coaches who helped guide him in his career. Included were Leo Johnson of Baldwinsville, Steve Jackowski of South Jefferson, Neal Aubel of Lowville, and Ed Perry of the U.S. Naval Academy. Roy and his wife Sandy live on a small farm in Pulaski, New York. He is an avid gardener and spends time growing vegetables and canning them. He is an avid hunter and spends time at his camp. Roy and Sandy have a daughter Deb, who.lives in North Carolina with her four children. For his professional contributions throughout his career, Roy was selected Teacher of the Year at Sandy Creek (1972). He was inducted into the Section Three wrestling Hall of Fame (1984). He received a Section Three Service Award in 1996, the Frontier League Meritorious Service Award in 1996, and the Section Three Special Award in 1998. Roy was honored by the NYSAAA with the Chapter 3 Athletic Administrator of the Year Award in 1999. For his many years of dedication to the sport of wrestling, the New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Roy Hunt by inducting him into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
