Randy Umberger first experienced wrestling in 1960 as an 8th grader in an intramural program at the newly opened Lower Dauphin Joint Jr/Sr High School. After a highly successful high school career he continued his wrestling at University of Maryland. Randy started his coaching career as the head coach at Catholic University of America in 1970. In 1972, he co-founded the Bethlehem Summer Open, prior to returning to his high school alma mater in 1973. At Lower Dauphin he served as assistant, head and co-coach of the Falcons. In 1980 he was recognized by the PWCA as the AAA Co-Coach of the Year and co-coached the US All-Stars in the Dapper Dan Classic. Randy also served a stint as assistant and head coach at Hershey High School. In most cases, when a coach retires from coaching that is the last you hear about them. But Randy is different, as he continued to work as District III Wrestling Chair, a member of the PIAA Steering Committee, Sectional, District and Regional Tournament Manager. The past 26 years Randy has enjoyed assisting with the PIAA Wrestling Championships and still serves as District III Wrestling Chairman. Randy is being honored not only for his coaching, but his contributions to wrestling and tonight receives the "Lifetime Service to Wrestling" Award.
