Darryl Clark

He just never gave up. Perhaps that is the best way to describe this year's Medal of Courage winner, Darryl Clark. In 1974, at the age of nine, Clark was diagnosed with a form of epilepsy characterized by momentary loss of consciousness. For 30 years, Clark took medication to control the seizures -- but nothing worked. Then, in 1997, despite the possibility of losing his speech and never being able to walk again, Darryl Clark opted to have surgery on the slim chance that the seizures might go away. The surgery was a success and Clark remains seizure-free to this day. And although he battled seizures throughout the entirety of his junior high and high school wrestling career, Clark became a two-time Tulsa National champion, a junior high state champion for Edmond in 1981, and a state high school champion in 1984, compiling a 117-20 career high school record. The Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame honors Darryl Clark as its recipient of the Medal of Courage.
