George Reid

A member of the Somerville High School wrestling team from 1956 through 1960, Reid was the team captain in 1960 when he won the New Jersey State Championship at 148 pounds. His wrestling skills took Reid on to Purdue University where he won three varsity letters (freshman were ineligible for varsity competition at the time) from 1961-65 and served as team captain as a junior and senior. A third place in the Big Ten Tournament qualified Reid for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Following his collegiate career, Reid was a Captain in the United States Marine Crops from 1966-69 and served in Vietnam from 1967-69. Reid's coaching career got underway in 1969 when he accepted a teaching job at Hillsborough High School where he established the wrestling program and served until 1972. He went back to Purdue as a graduated assistant from 1972-1974 where he helped produce three NCAA All-Americans and one qualifier for the 1980 boycotted Olympic Team. The University of Georgia was Reid's next stop as the head wrestling coach from 1974-80. He produced two Southeast Conference champions and one NCAA All-American. Despite qualifying a number of wrestlers for the NCAA Tournament, the wrestling program at Georgia was a casualty of Title IX and the sport was discontinued in 1980. Reid returned to New Jersey and became the head wrestling coach at Bridgewater-Raritan from 1980-2000. His teams compiled a 122-159-3 record and won two Somerset County Championships and 30 individual county titles. Reid's teams were Central Jersey Group IV sectional qualifiers in 1994 and 1995. His wrestlers won 30 individual District 18 titles, including two Outstanding Wrestler Awards, and nine Region 5 titles. He had one state champion who went on to become a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champ and an NCAA All-American for the University of Virginia. Reid served as Vice-President and President of the Region 5 Wrestling Coaches Association, was a three time District 18 Coach of the Year and served as District 18's representative in Region 5 for 10 years. He was a 1990 inductee into the Region 5 Wrestling Hall of Fame and 1996 inductee into the Somerville High School Hall of Fame. Reid was coach of the New Jersey High School Freestyle Team (Team New Jersey) from 1980-85 and has served as a clinician and camp director at numerous locations. A member of the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the United States Golf Association, Reid is a fountain Head Country Club (Hagerstown, MD) member where he is the Director of the Senior Golf Program.
