A coach at Port Jefferson High School for 21 years, Robert Armstrong was passionate about two things, his family and the sport of wrestling.

He left and indelible mark on the development of wrestling in Suffolk County and a lasting influence upon thousands of wrestlers nationwide.

Bob grew up in Levittown, New York, attending Levittown Memorial High School and then Ithaca College.

During his 23 years as a coach, his teams won 250 duals and 13 league team titles. Armstrong coached 60 league champions, 50 all-county wrestlers and led his team to the New York State Cup in 1985.

Armstrong was selected Suffolk County Coach of the Year eight times and the annual Port Jefferson tournament is named in his honor.

He received the Suffolk County Coaches Association's Grand Master Award posthumously in 1996.

Bob and his wife Ginny founded the Stroudsburg Wrestling Camp in 1972. Affectionately known as “The Burg,” it was born both out of a strong resolve and wish to improve the sport of wrestling and the belief in its ability to build both athleticism and a strong sense of character. The camp allowed the Armstrongs to create an environment in which more than 15,000 wrestlers from across the country grew as wrestlers and gentlemen.
