Jim Arjes

A graduate of Waverly High School and Wartburg College, Mr. Arjes served the sport for a 25 year period, including 22 as a head coach. After spending three years as an assistant coach at Clinton, he moved to Nevada, where he started the program and posted a two year 15-8 dual meet record. In 1969, he began a 20-year stint at Turkey Valley, Jackson Junction. At Turkey Valley he guided his teams to seven undefeated seasons and runner-up (1976), third place (1981) and fourth place (1980) in the Class AA State Meet. His Turkey Valley teams won 189 duals meets while losing just 48 and tying two, for a 79.3 winning percentage. That swelled his career mark to a solid 204 victories against 56 losses and two ties. His teams produced 16 conference championships, won nine sectional titles and six times brought home the gold at the district tournament. He coached 33 State Meet place winners including five state champions. Five of his proteges went on to be NCAA All Americans. He retired as wrestling coach after the 1988 season.
