Richard "Pete" Hausrath

Richard "Pete" Hausrath's participation in wrestling at Massapequa High School under the tutelage of Coach John Haas was to mark the beginning of more than five decades of dedication to wrestling as a competitor and coach. "Pete" is appreciative for the encouragement and guidance he received from some of the great names in American wrestling throughout his career: Dan Gable, Harold Nichols, Lou Giani, Robert Smith, Les Anderson and others. A retired teacher of 40 years and father of Heather, Morgan, Heidi and Jonathan, this resident of New South Berlin is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Unadilla Valley High School wrestling program. Coach Hausrath has held varsity positions at Oelwein High School in Iowa, Sherburne, New York, and Perham, Minnesota, as well as several assistant coaching assignments. Additionally, he was two time National Freestyle/Greco Roman coach and assisted Coach Stanbro in developing a cultural exchange program and a Summer National Tournament. "Pete" has had the honor of coaching several All-Americans, among them, Gerald Seifgert, Dereck Bigford, Jon Buhner and Casey Schweitzer. Working as a guest clinician, Coach Hausrath has trained "thousands" of young wrestlers in Iowa, North Dakota, New York, and Minnesota. ln all, he has directed over fifty "Red Flag" Wrestling Camps. This member of the lowa State University wrestling team and the NYAC national championship team in the early 60's was named twice as the Section IV Coach of the Year, in 1978 and 1979. The New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Richard "Pete" Hausrath by inducting him into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
