Dan Wickham
Dan Wickham might be a bit hard to locate these days since his retirement from Unatego Central School in 2002. Both he and his wife Ursula spend 5 months a year traveling around the nation in their RV. Following his graduation from Iowa's Buena Vista University in 1967, this Norwich native became an elementary physical education teacher in the Unatego school district. His wrestling career began in 1967 at Afton High School as the varsity coach from 1967-69. Following that, he accepted the varsity position at Unatego in 1969 and remained there as head coach until 1988. Dan also coached modiï¬ed football and baseball, as well as JV baseball, while at the school. Dan's teams won nine section titles, six Susquehanna East Championships, three overall Susquehanna Team Championships, and produced an overall record of 200-67-3 in addition to winning the 1983 Section lV overall championship as a Class D school. Personally, he was recognized as Section IV Coach of the Year a total of seven times, certainly a measure of Section lV coaches' appreciation of his efforts and dedication. Following 1988, Dan signed on as the assistant coach at Oneonta High School until 1998 when he again returned to Unatego as an assistant coach until 2002. In 2004, Coach Wickham was honored with the Director's Award by the Oneonta Rotary Tournament Board and, in 2004, Dan was inducted into the Section IV Wrestling Hall of Fame. Four of his former wrestlers are presently coaching at the high school level in New York State. Dan and Ursula's son, Scott, coaches at Saugerities High School and was named Coach of the Year by the coaches of Section IX in 2008. Dan and Ursula have two sons, Scott and Keith. The New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Dan Wickham by inducting him into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
