Fred Marcello

In the words of his college coach, Ed Michaels (University at Buffalo), "[Fred] Marcello is one of the strongest athletes l have ever coached. As a consequence, he is very tough on top. He uses the tight waist ride about as effectively as it can be used." Fred's career began at Binghamton North High School where he had four coaches in four years before advancing to a more organized program at Broome County Community College in 1970. As a junior college competitor, Fred was to become a Region lll Champion and NJCAA All-American prior to transferring to the University at Buffalo in 1971. While at UB, Coach Marcello was the Eastem Regional Champion and Division I All-American in 1973. His contributions to the University at Buffalo's wrestling team from 1971-73 were instrumental in making that team one of the most successful in the school's history (31-3-1). He was named to the Region lll All-Decade Team (1970s) and was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 1979. Following graduation, Fred was hired as a Business Teacher at Owego Central School and he accepted the head coaching assignment at Maine-Endwell the same year. His teams gained recognition with their three Union-Endicott Invitational Dual Meet Champions, two Windsor Tournament Championships, three STAC championships, and five Section lV Class A Championships. In all, his kids won two individual State championships, and his teams set a record of 47 straight victories, the second longest streak in Section lV's history. ln addition, M-E wrestlers moving on to the intercollegiate arena, Mark Gumble and Brian Quick, were to become two-time Division Ill National champions. Today, Fred is retired from Owego and operates a car dealership. He and his wife Antoinette have two children, Nicole and Franco. The New York State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Fred Marcello by inducting him into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
