Marty Sherman

1999 marked the close of a stellar career at Corinth Central School for Marty Sherman. Although Marty did not wrestle in high school or college, he accepted a physical education position at Corinth in 1966 and was told by the superintendent at the interview that, together with his P.E. position, he would be the assistant football coach and would also head the wrestling team as part of his duties; he eagerly accepted. This Ithaca College graduate's efforts in the years that followed built one of New York State's most outstanding and successful wrestling programs. ln the words of C.J. Herbert, principal of Hudson Falls Central School, "Marty remains one of the legends in the Adirondack League and Section ll as a whole. He always sought a means of providing his athletes with the best competition available if that meant local toumaments or trips to the opposite end of the state. As a mentor of young men, Marty is unrivaled." Marty's teams amassed 304 wins in his 33 years at the helm of Corinth wrestling, a record that a select few have achieved in our state. In addition to his coaching duties, Marty also served as the Section ll Chairman for ten years and is currently the New York State Wrestling Chairman. His efforts as an administrator have dramatically improved the state tournament by procuring the 15,000 seat Times-Union Center in our State Capital as a permanent site for the annual event. Twice Marty has been named the Section ll Coach of the Year and, in 2003, he was inducted into the New York State Wrestling Hall of Fame. He credits his wife Denise and his two daughters, Sarah and Michelle, for their support and encouragement during his 43 years of involvement with wrestling. Marty also credits the efforts of his competitors Jack LaBombard of Queensbury, Bob Carthy of Glens Falls, George Chickanis of Hudson Falls, and Andy McGuggin of South Glens Falls for helping him along the way. The New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Marty Sherman by inducting him into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
