Tony Grifa

Tony began his wrestling career at Plainfield High School and captained the squad his senior year. An all around athlete, he lettered in three sports and captained in football, baseball and wrestling teams his senior year. He continued his wrestling at Rutgers University.

While on active duty as an army intelligence officer, he found time to coach the Springfield College freshman championship and had four individual champs out of eight weight classes.

Tony also served as an assistant wrestling and football coach at Scotch Plains – Fanwood High School and later served as an assistant football coach at Wall High School. Tony devoted many years as a high school and college sports official. He officiated wrestling for 35 years in a career that touched five decades, from the 1950s into the 90s. He officiated in over 1000 dual meets! He refereed in the New Jersey State Tournament for over 20 years and districts for 30 consecutive years. He was president and secretary of the New Jersey Wrestling Association. He was president of the shore chapter and was one of its founding fathers. He served as the chapter rules interpreter for 25 years and was the cadet supervisor for 14 years. Tony is a member of the Region 6 wrestling hall of fame and the Jersey Shore hall of fame. He was an E.I.W.O.A for 25 years and is an honorary lifetime member. He received the Mirshak Award for excellence in officiating.

Tony was highly respected in officiating circles. He is one of the few officials ever to officiate the state finals in football, wrestling and baseball.
