Art McCall graduated from Upper Darby in 1953. He tied the only state champion from District 1 in the entire decade, but lost on criteria. It was good enough to earn a scholarship to Temple. He started his coaching career at Penn while in graduate school. In 1961, he started teaching and coaching at Upper Darby. In twenty years at Upper Darby, he had a championship the first year and his last year with many titles in between. In 1973, his team won the district/regional title. In 1980, he left coaching to serve as president of the teachers union. However, a colleague asked him to help his son and a new career was launched in "mentoring" grapplers. Art has done this for nearly thirty years along with eight seasons of coaching at Conestoga and five years at Drexel. The most notable grapplers he coached or mentored were Andy Matter, 2 time NCAA champ for Penn State; Dave lcenhower, coach of College of New Jersey who will become only the 4th person to ever win 500 meets; Ron Sheehan, Bloomsburg, 2 time All-American and Div. II NCAA Champions; Carl Dambman, Conference Champ and Pan Am Gold Medalist; Kemble Matter, East Stroudsburg All-American and Brett Matter, University of Pennsylvania National Champion. Art is currently mentoring kids from a number of schools serving as a volunteer coach at Germantown Academy.
