Donald Booth, Sr.
Don Booth Don Booth was born in South Carolina in 1939. His school years were spent in Johnston, South Carolina where he graduated in 1957 as valedictorian. He went to the University of South Carolina and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduating, Don began work for NASA at Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA in the computer division in June of 1962. It was here that he met his future wife in 1963. Don got involved with wrestling when his six year old son, Donald, came home with a wrestling form and began wrestling. In January 1980, Donald became a member of the York Youth Wrestling team in 1981, which was part of the James-York Youth League. This league was composed of teams from York County and Newport News. In 1982, Don became the match maker and the team manager for the York Youth Wrestling teams. He became commissioner of the James-York Youth League and moved the tournament to York High School the following years. During the 1984 tournament, a match had to be decided by the flip of a coin according to the rulebook. Both the referee and Don felt this was a poor solution, so the follow year Don came up with the sudden victory tiebreaker. In 1993, the tournament was moved to the Hampton Coliseum because the league had outgrown the high school gym. Booth also assisted with the York Classic from 1984-1994 and regional tournaments for York High School. Don was Vice-President, President and Treasurer of the Peninsula Wrestling Association as well as a backbone of the Virginia Duals Wrestling Tournament for many years.
