George Heebner

George started his wrestling career at Shamokin Jr. High School. He continued wrestling in high school and then Franklin & Marshall College, where he escaped injury two out of his four years. At the end of his college career, George started coaching and officiating wrestling. In 1963, he became coach at Octorara Area High School, a position he would hold for twenty-five years. To understand what the young men in the Octorara schools accomplished during this era, it's important to remember that for about the first fifteen years the wrestlers started their career in 9th grade. They worked very hard to overcome their lack of experience in order to succeed. His Southern Chester County League record was 140-69-3 and had eleven PIAA State Tournament participants. He was elected SCCL Coach of the Year seven times. In 1967, George was elected representative for the SCCL and each year they kept re-electing him. Seems they knew a good man, and today he is still the "At-Large" member for AA Affairs. This includes supervisor of the District 1 Tournament and serving as liaison to the Southeastern Regional AA Tournament. It seems coaching did not keep George busy enough so he began officiating, and for the next thirty plus years he officiated not only high school but he did many AAU tournaments. Since 2004, you can find George weighing in the contest ants at the PIAA State Tournament.
