Dale Pierre

Lifetime Service Dale's scholastic career was spent at Champaign Central High School in Champaign, Illinois where he was a member of Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials' Hall of Fame coach Roy Swindell's wrestling squad. Upon his high school graduation Dale enrolled at Illinois State University where he continued his wrestling experience under another IWCOA Hall of Fame coach, Dr. Eugene Hill. Dale would go on to earn both his Bachelor's as well as his Masters degree from ISU. Following a stint in the military, Dale took a teaching position in Ellsworth, Illinois "” a school, ironically, with no wrestling program. Ultimately, in 1960, Dale moved into the community in which he would spend most of his great coaching career "” Wheaton, Illinois. Dale joined the Tiger wrestling program of Hall of Famer Don S. Garner as the freshman wrestling coach (the sophomore wrestling coach was Hall of Famer Ed Ewoldt). In 1964 the demands of a growing Wheaton community saw a second Wheaton high school constructed to the north. Dale Pierre left Wheaton Central to assumed the Head Wrestling Coach position at the newly opened Wheaton North High; Dale would remain as the Falcon Head coach until his retirement in 1988. During his 24-year stay as the Head Coach at Wheaton North, Dale's teams would win 237 dual meets; six conference championships; numerous IHSA District (now Regional) titles; placed in the top five in several IHSA Sectionals; and finished in the top ten in the IHSA State Finals on four occasions. His 1979 team finished third in the State Finals. Additionally, his program produced 54 individual conference champions along with an untold number of District, Regional and Sectional champions. Thirty-eight individuals qualified for the IHSA State Finals under Dale's leadership; twenty-five of those became place winners, including three individual State Champions. His two sons, Mike and Scott, were a testament to Dale's coaching abilities (and to a degree, his bloodline) as the two of them brought home seven IHSA place medals "” including two State Championships. An outstanding scholastic coach, Dale also contributed to the sport beyond the wrestling room. A true advocate of organized wrestling programs, Dale was instrumental in creating and organizing the Wheaton Youth Wrestling Program; served several times as an officer in the then evolving IWCOA; and was very active in the Illinois Wrestling Federation "” including serving as a coach for seven National Junior Teams. Occasionally Dale would "cross-the-line" and officiate at numerous developmental summer Freestyle and Greco IWF tournaments; Dale even volunteered as an official at some of the Mayor Daley Club tournaments at Navy Pier. For his many achievements as a coach combined with his many contributions to the sport, the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials inducted Dale into its Hall of Fame in 1984. Going one step further in 1994, the IWCOA selected Dale as a Grand Marshall for the IHSA State Finals.
