John Harford
Jack Harford graduated from Waynesboro High School in Pennsylvania were he excelled in football, wrestling, and track. Following four years in the Navy, Jack entered Gettysburg College to attain a degree in Physical Education and then a Masters Degree from East Stroudsburg University. Jack moved on to teach and coach at the high school level, where he served for 24 years as a football coach and 26 years as wrestling coach, 22 of those years at Pennsville High School. Jack was the first coach in southern New Jersey to reach the 200 win plateau and compiled a dual meet record of 228 wins and 65 losses. His teams captured 27 team championships including 4 Christmas Tournaments, 7 Districts, 8 Tri-County Conference titles and 8 South Jersey Conference Wrestling Championships. He compiled 21 consecutive winning seasons, 3 undefeated seasons, a 36 meet winning streak, and during the seasons of 1965-1971 a team record of 57-1. He has produced 3 individual State Champions, 2 State Runners up, 3 State Third Place Champions, and 76 District Champions. Jack’s commitment to wrestling goes beyond the wins and losses of the mat. He served for a decade on the Executive Committee of the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame. He has served as President and Vice-President of Region 8, and he is the Co-founder of the South Jersey Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association. With these accomplishments, Jack has been honored as the New Jersey Coach of the Year in 1981 and the Region Coach of the Year in 1976. He also received the most revered wrestling honor in New Jersey, the Harry E. Lake Award for contributions to New Jersey Wrestling. Jack was a great coach but an equally fine gentleman who did much to promote wrestling in New Jersey.
