Harold Vandermark

Harold Vandermark graduated from tiny Nanticoke High School in Pennsylvania and then attended and graduated from Shippensburg University. When he arrived at North Hunterdon Regional High School in 1955 only club wrestling was available, and although Harry never wrestled, he was asked to start an interscholastic wrestling program. And start a program he did! First he immersed himself in learning what wrestling was all about. He read instructional manuals, talked to those he respected in the coaching ranks, attended clinics, and finally practiced wrestling moves on the mat. He quickly fell in love with wrestling and the results were remarkably. In eighteen years in the highly competitive Hunterdon and Warren Counties, his teams had only one losing season. His overall record was 148-69-3. Four times his teams won the District 17 title and finished second numerous times. In 1971 North was ranked second in the state. Individually, he coached seven state champions including one Outstanding Wrestler, 25 Region Champs, and 52 District champs. In recognition of his achievements, Harold received the Wilfred E. Cann trophy as Coach of the Year and the prestigious Harry E. Lake award for his contribution to New Jersey wrestling.

Harry’s contribution to wrestling transcends wins, loses, and awards. He taught the importance of winning and losing with grace. He was always concerned about gentlemanly behavior and often said “being polite doesn’t cost anything.” He had excellent rapport with his wrestlers many of whom considered him a father figure, one who took an interest in his charges in the classroom and after school in life. He repeatedly stressed college as a personal goal and encouraged his wrestlers to continue their learning beyond high school often following their experiences and being available should any of his boys need support in difficult times. Harry is remembered as a man for all reasons. Yes, Harry Vandermark was a remarkable man and wrestling has profited from his contribution.
