Coach Calhoun is recognized for his years of dedication to the development of leadership and citizenship in young people through the sport of wrestling.Ron Calhoun became the first State Champion for Clackamas high school. After graduation, he competed at Portland State University where he was a 4 time NAIA Conference champion. His coaching career began as an assistant coach at Franklin high school before becoming head coach at Reynolds high school. After one year, he became head coach at Sandy high school where he was for the next 22 years. As head coach, his teams finished 6th, fourth and second in the state Tournament.

In 1983 Coach Calhoun was named “Wrestling Coach of the Year” by the coaches and Portland Officials Association. He was the cultural exchange coach and took the team in 1983 to Germany. During his tenure he coached seven Oregon State wrestling champions.

For his dedication and lasting influence on wrestling, Ron Calhoun is presented the National Wrestling Hall of Fame’s “Lifetime Service to Wrestling” award for the class of 2007.
