Chip Allison
Chip Allison’s life in Missouri wrestling began in the 1971–72 season at Roosevelt High School in south St. Louis. After graduation he continued at Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau. With a degree in education, he started coaching with a two-year stint at Hannibal High School, then moved to Parkway South in 1982.
Parkway South became home. His teams won seven district championships, six conference championships, and 39 tournament team titles, including 10 Parkway tournament titles. They compiled a 140–41 dual record, with undefeated regular seasons from 1985 through 1987, and posted four top-11 finishes at the state tournament. He was a seven-time District Coach of the Year and a six-time Conference Coach of the Year, and finished his career as the fifth-winningest coach in Missouri history.
Those years brought lasting honors: induction into the Parkway South Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1998, the Parkway South Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022, and the Roosevelt High School Hall of Fame in 2026. Of 83 Roosevelt inductees, he is only the fourth coach so honored. In 2021 the Parkway South Patriot Classic was permanently renamed the Chip Allison Patriot Classic Tournament.
Wrestling gave Allison a place to belong. Born with talipes equinovarus, or club feet, he did not know whether any sport would be open to him until a neighborhood friend introduced him to the mat. From that day the sport became a lifelong passion, a source of confidence, and an identity. He later served as a wrestling coach, athletic director, and classroom teacher, giving back what wrestling had given him. One of his greatest joys was mentoring alongside his son at Parkway West for six years.
Last year he came out of retirement to take the head coaching job at Marquette when the program was at risk of disappearing. With no assistants in place, he brought two former coaches out of retirement and gathered help from within the school so that about 70 boys and girls could still be part of something larger than themselves. This award fulfills a dream that began when a young wrestler with club feet first stepped on the mat and was noticed for his talent.
