Ron Coit

Ron Coit attended Normal Community High School where he established himself as a standout wrestler, which included three years wrestling on the Ironmen varsity squad. During his prep career, he compiled a record of 82-15-2 and was a three-time Capital Conference Champion before graduating in 1977. 

After his career on the mat ended as a participant, Ron chose to funnel his passion for the sport into the officiating ranks. He first licensed with the IHSA as an official in 1980 and began working his way up, being assigned to officiate his first Regional Tournament in 1988 and his first Individual Sectional Tournament in 1993. Ron’s first State Final assignment would come when he was selected to work the 1998 IHSA Dual Team Wrestling State Finals. His first time working for the IHSA Individual Wrestling State Finals would come in 2000. All told, he has worked at the Individual State tourney and the Dual Team State Finals consecutively for 28 years. 

In 2004, he became the first non-coach to receive The George Girardi Award for his dedication to wrestling at the Normal U-High George Girardi Invitational. Ron has also worked the Cross State Classic, the IWCOA Illinois/Indiana Classic Duals, the Middle School National Duals, IKWF State Championships, the IESA State Championships, IWCOA Frosh/Soph State Series and the Girls IHSA State Series on multiple occasions. 

Ron was named Official of the Year by the IWCOA in 2006 and has been nominated for that honor on several other occasions. In 2009, he received the IHSA 30-Year Service Award and in 2010 was inducted into the IWCOA Hall Of Fame. In 2012, he received the IWCOA Bronze Level Special Recognition Award (15 state finals) and Silver Level Award in 2017 (20 state finals). In 2013, he received Illinois Official of the Year honors from the IHSA. 

Ron has served on the IHSA Wrestling Advisory Committee from 2017 through 2019, as well as on the IESA Officials and Wrestling Advisory Committee. In 2019, Ron was designated as Head Official for the IESA State Tournament which continued for three more years. Also, in 2019 he had the great honor of being selected as one of four Grand Marshals for the IHSA State Wrestling Championships. In 2020, he received the IWCOA Gold Level Special Recognition Award (40 years) as well as his 40-Year Service Award from the IHSA. In 2022, he received an IWCOA Lifetime Service Award for his dedication to the Sport of Wrestling. 

A resident of Farmer City, Ron and his wife, Kaye have been married for 45 years. They have three married daughters, Melissa, Melinda, and Sara. Ron and Kaye have 11 grandchildren.
