Medal of Courage recipients embody resilience, sacrifice, and the strength to face extraordinary adversity.
Few exemplify these qualities more profoundly than Riley McNeal.

McNeal wrestled four years for Bellarmine Preparatory School in Tacoma, graduating in 2001. A team captain and two-time MVP, he placed at the 2001 Mat Classic State Championships at 189 pounds and completed his high school career with a 99–39 record, earning the respect of teammates and opponents alike.

After enrolling at the University of Idaho, Riley made a life-changing decision: he paused his education to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. As a Lance Corporal, he deployed to Iraq during combat operations in the Al Anbar province. During one mission, his military vehicle was struck by an explosive device. Despite sustaining injuries, McNeal returned immediately to active duty, demonstrating courage and resolve in the face of immense danger. For his actions and sacrifice, he was awarded the Purple Heart in 2006.

Following his service, Riley returned to the University of Idaho to complete his degree and, in 2008, became the Head Wrestling Coach at Sammamish High School, reflecting his continued dedication to youth and the sport that shaped him.

In 2010, McNeal joined the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office, where he has built a record of exceptional service. On October 24, 2023, he received the Cowlitz County Excellence in Service Award for solving a cold-case homicide and tenaciously pursuing the prosecution of a dangerous child predator. As a Detective Sergeant, he is recognized for extraordinary performance both in handling emergency response and in mentoring new deputies. His colleagues describe him as an active problem solver who consistently improves operations, supports his team, and serves his community with integrity and compassion.

Riley and his wife Molly live in Longview, Washington, where they are the proud parents of four children: Brody, Ella, Jake, and Sloane.

Through military sacrifice, public service, and unwavering strength in the face of adversity, Riley McNeal represents the true spirit of the Medal of Courage.
