Mark Kondo has spent more than five decades contributing to the sport of wrestling in Washington through exceptional achievements as an athlete, coach, mentor, and athletic administrator.

Kondo began his wrestling career at Rogers High School in Spokane, competing under Hall of Fame coach Ken Pelo (NWHOF 1998). He became the school’s first-ever state champion as a junior in 1967 and returned to the finals as the state runner-up in 1968. He continued his academic and athletic career at the University of Washington, lettering for three seasons under Hall of Fame coach Jim Smith (NWHOF 2019) and graduating in 1972.

Kondo entered coaching at Whitworth College from 1974–1976, where he also served as assistant athletic director. He then spent ten years at Ferris High School, first as an assistant coach and later as head coach. In 1993, he joined the staff at Othello High School, dedicating 20 years to the program and contributing to one of the most successful eras in school history.

In 2017, Kondo became athletic director at Quincy High School, where he also supported the emerging girls’ wrestling program. He served as the assistant girls coach in 2017–2018, then as head coach in 2018–2019 and again from 2023 to the present.

Kondo’s coaching résumé includes remarkable success. At Othello, he helped guide the Huskies to 10 league titles, 16 individual state champions, and 93 state medalists. The program captured two state team championships and earned three additional top-four finishes. Kondo has helped coach 4 girls state champions at 3 different high schools, contributing significantly to the growth of the sport for female athletes.

His contributions have been widely recognized. Kondo was named the 2025 CWAC Girls Coach of the Year and the 2A Washington State Girls Coach of the Year. He is an inductee of the John Rogers High School Walk of Fame and Wrestling Hall of Fame, and he entered the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2011.

Beyond wrestling, Kondo enjoyed a highly successful softball coaching career. His Othello Junior High softball teams compiled a remarkable 105–3 record over eleven years. Although retired from teaching, he continues to coach wrestling at Quincy High School.

Mark and his wife Katie live in Quincy, Washington. They are the parents of Mikelanne and Mark (Ross) III, and proud grandparents of Emiko, Kimiko, Makaya, Johnni, and Mark IV.
