Paul Gilbert

Paul Gilbert’s life and career stand as a remarkable example of how dedication, leadership, and vision can influence both the sport of wrestling and the broader business world. For more than three decades, Gilbert combined his love of wrestling with his professional expertise, leaving an indelible mark on athlete safety, sports innovation, and community service.

Born on May 3, 1960, in Baltimore, Maryland, Gilbert graduated from Bloomsburg University in 1982 before beginning a career that would eventually place him at the helm of Resilite Sports Products, Inc. in Northumberland, Pennsylvania. As President and CEO, a position he held for 35 years until his retirement in 2020, Gilbert led Resilite to become the world’s leading manufacturer of wrestling mats. His stewardship was defined by both innovation and a deep commitment to the athletes who relied on the company’s products.

One of Gilbert’s most significant contributions was his leadership in developing safety standards for sports mats. Serving as chairman of the ASTM committee responsible for impact protection standards, he worked tirelessly to ensure wrestling mats met the highest levels of safety. He championed athlete protection by educating customers, competitors, and industry leaders on the importance of mats that met ASTM standards. His efforts not only elevated safety in wrestling but also helped establish industry-wide expectations that continue to protect athletes today.

Gilbert also oversaw a period of innovation at Resilite, including the introduction of Digi-Print mats, which allowed programs to customize mats with high-quality graphics. This advancement not only modernized the appearance of wrestling venues but also helped programs enhance branding and inspire athletes.

Beyond the boardroom, Gilbert’s generosity and commitment to wrestling were evident through his extensive philanthropic efforts. Under his leadership, Resilite became the annual title sponsor of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame’s Honors Weekend and made numerous donations to support wrestling at every level. He was instrumental in providing all of the mats for the Dan Gable Teaching Center at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and for the Dan Gable Museum in Iowa.

Gilbert’s outreach helped establish partnerships with organizations such as the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and Beat the Streets, providing quality wrestling mats to programs that otherwise might not have had the resources.

Closer to home, Gilbert supported Pennsylvania wrestling programs at Bloomsburg University and Lock Haven University. His alma mater, Southern Columbia High School, recognized his achievements by naming him a Distinguished Alumnus in 2019.

Respected as a businessman, philanthropist, and community leader, Paul Gilbert exemplifies what it means to be an “Outstanding American.”

Gilbert still lives in Bloomsburg, but he spends nearly half of his time in southwest Florida. He enjoys his retirement time with his wife, Debra, and their children, Jennifer and Matthew.
