Tom Corey

Thomas B. Corey has devoted more than four decades to the sport of wrestling as a coach, official, and leader, establishing himself as one of the most respected figures in the officiating community. A 1975 graduate of Temple University, where he finished magna cum laude, Corey began his wrestling service as the head coach at LaSalle College High School from 1972 to 1975. Soon after, he turned his full attention to officiating, beginning a career that would span more than 40 years at the high school, collegiate, and international levels. His dedication, knowledge, and integrity made him a fixture at championship events and a mentor to generations of athletes and officials alike.

Corey’s officiating résumé is remarkable in both scope and longevity. From 1973 to 2014, he served as a PIAA wrestling official, overseeing state-level competitions including the PIAA Individual Championships in 1986 and 1987 and the PIAA Team Championships in 2004. At the collegiate level, he officiated NCAA Division I Championships in 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2008, and from 1988 through 2013 he worked 25 NCAA Division I qualifying tournaments. His service extended to Division II and Division III, where he officiated at national championships from 1998 through 2014, working 47 NCAA Division III qualifiers during that span.

In addition to domestic service, Corey represented the United States on the international stage. From 1979 to 1984, he officiated at FILA (now UWW) Cadet (now U17) and Junior (now U20) World Championships. He was inducted into the Southeast Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2017.

Corey has also provided vital leadership behind the scenes. Since 2011, he has served as secretary and treasurer of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Officials Association, where he continues to support and mentor fellow officials. He has also been an active member of the National Wrestling Officials Association and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame community. His peers, including fellow officials who worked alongside him for decades, describe him as highly knowledgeable, deeply respected, and unwavering in his fairness and consistency.

Outside of wrestling, Corey built a distinguished career in government service. He worked more than 30 years as a contracting officer with the U.S. Navy and Department of Defense, retiring in 2007 after leading teams responsible for managing contracts and supporting small and minority-owned businesses in the Mid-Atlantic region. The same values of professionalism and integrity that marked his military and civilian service also defined his career in wrestling. For his lifelong commitment to the sport, and for his leadership as both an official and mentor, Thomas B. Corey is a most deserving inductee into the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Corey lives in St. Simons Island, Georgia with his wife, Gayle, and has four adult children, Joseph, Vanessa, Erin and Janai.
