Ralph Voit
Ralph Voit has dedicated his life to wrestling as both a competitor and a coach, leaving a lasting legacy on the sport in Pennsylvania. A native of Bethlehem, Voit rose from modest beginnings as a high school wrestler to become a prep school state champion at Blair Academy in 1981. He continued his career at Slippery Rock University, where he earned distinction as an Eastern Regional champion at 167 pounds in 1986 and twice qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships.
Voit’s transition into coaching proved to be even more impactful. He began as the head coach at Brandywine Heights High School from 1986 to 1988, before joining the staff at Governor Mifflin Junior High. After 12 years of developing wrestlers at the middle school level, he became the head coach at Governor Mifflin High School, where he led the program for more than two decades. Over the course of his 22 varsity seasons, Voit compiled 253 dual victories, making him the winningest wrestling coach in Governor Mifflin history. His teams captured four Berks County team championships, three state champions, and seven district champions, while producing 46 state qualifiers and 23 district place winners.
Beyond the statistics, Voit has consistently emphasized the values of sportsmanship, perseverance, and integrity. His greatest contribution to wrestling, as he notes himself, has been instilling life lessons that extend beyond the mat. Generations of athletes have benefited from his steady leadership.
Voit’s work has been recognized on multiple levels. He was twice named Berks County Coach of the Year, in 2004 and 2011, and he played a leading role in launching one of Pennsylvania’s first sanctioned high school girls’ wrestling programs at Governor Mifflin. His efforts helped open doors for female athletes and contributed to the broader movement to grow opportunities for women in the sport statewide. In addition, he has been active in professional organizations such as the Berks County Wrestling Coaches Association, and he continues to give back to his alma mater, Dieruff High School, through financial support and service.
A teacher by profession, Voit has also served his school community as an assistant cross-country coach, assistant football coach, game manager for multiple sports, and public address announcer for football games. Through every role, he has remained committed to education, athletics, and service. For more than 35 years, Ralph Voit has built a legacy as a competitor, mentor, and leader in wrestling. His induction into the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame stands as a testament to his lifelong commitment to developing athletes and advancing the sport he loves.
Voit lives in Reading with his wife Cheryl and has two adult children, a daughter, Kira, and son, Ralph Jr. (RJ).
