Jeff Byers
Jeff Byers has devoted more than three decades to advancing the sport of wrestling through his work as a broadcaster, writer, and ambassador for the sport. A lifelong resident of Pennsylvania and a 1992 graduate of Penn State University, Byers has become one of the most recognized voices in amateur wrestling.
His career began humbly, working as a local board operator at WRSC in State College while attending Penn State, but his passion and persistence quickly propelled him into a career in sports radio. Today, he is widely regarded as the “Voice of Penn State Wrestling,” a position he has held since his first broadcast in 1988. Over the years, he has called hundreds of dual meets, tournaments, and championship events, helping to elevate the visibility of the Nittany Lions’ program to fans across the country.
Byers’ broadcasting career extends well beyond collegiate mats. He has been a fixture in high school wrestling circles, beginning regular coverage of Centre County matches in the early 1990s and resuming that commitment again in 2023. His work has also included broadcasting matches in Punxsutawney and producing numerous radio segments dedicated to the sport. Beyond his play-by-play calls, Byers’ deep knowledge and thoughtful storytelling have made him a trusted voice within the wrestling community. He has served as emcee for numerous banquets and ceremonies, including the Penn State Wrestling Club Awards Banquet, the PA Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Honors Banquet, and the Central Pennsylvania Wrestling Breakfast.
His dedication has been recognized with multiple awards and honors. Byers was the first broadcaster to be named WIN Magazine’s Wrestling Journalist of the Year in 1999, and he earned the award again in 2011. In 2007, the National Wrestling Media Association named him Broadcaster of the Year, and in 2011 he received the Penn State Wrestling Club’s Edward A. Sulkowski Award for his contributions to the program. In addition, he has contributed numerous articles and columns to respected publications such as Town & Gown, StateCollege.com, and Pennsylvania Wrestling News. His writing includes a feature article for the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships program, further underscoring his impact on the sport through both spoken and written word. Meanwhile, his record of 36 consecutive years on air makes him the longest-tenured wrestling broadcaster in the United States.
Beyond broadcasting, Byers has committed himself to service in the wrestling community. He currently supports the Penn State Wrestling Club and the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. For more than three decades, Jeff Byers has used his platform to bring wrestling into the homes of fans, celebrate its athletes, and preserve its traditions.
His induction into the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is a fitting recognition of a career devoted to elevating the sport.
