Corey Beckner
Virginia wrestling gets great mileage from move-ins, especially from its fellow Commonwealth, Pennsylvania.
Corey Beckner, a longtime friend of wrestling and a current resident of Chesapeake, is an outstanding example.
He began his 35-year officiating career with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association while still an undergraduate at Penn State University.
After graduating in 1991, he began a busy decade that included continuing to referee until 1999, serving as an assistant coach for Hanover High School from 1992-99, marrying his wife of 29 years Kimberly, and becoming a sales representative for Statistical Analysis System Services.
After moving to Virginia in 2002, he quickly made his mark as a topflight Virginia High School League official. For 23 years, his colleague have assigned him to multiple high-profile events, including 15 Virignia state tournaments. He soon added national level events, including Beast of the East, Super 32, and the National High School Coaching Association Nationals. Virginia continued to crowd his calendar as he worked the Virginia Duals, the Virginia Challenge Holiday Duals, and the Virginia Wrestling Association Kids Folksyle States.
In all of the tournaments, Beckner would often serve as head official and tournament director.
Jim Diehl, who received the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award from the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2024, admires Beckner's drive and ability saying that “These huge tournaments annually present an organizational and management challenge of the first order. When Corey was involved, the experience for wrestlers, coaches, teams, parents, officials, and spectators was invariably positive.”
Beckner's restless energy led to new ventures, including becoming a member of the board of directors for the Virginia Challenge Holiday Duals, which flourished during his eight-year tenure from 2013-21. He has served in an executive role for VAWA since 2015, and promoted the innovation and incorporation of Trackwrestling, now established in VAWA and VHSL events.
Finally, he fulfilled a founder's dream by organizing two new tournaments in 2011, the Interstate 64 Wrestling Championship and the I-64 Duals, which brings in 50 teams with over 600 wrestlers.
For quantity and quality of service to Virginia wrestling, few can match Corey Beckner.
