Pete Smith, a 1960 graduate of Clarks Summit-Abington High School (now Abington Heights), was a multi-sport athlete, winning three varsity letters in football, wrestling and baseball.

In wrestling, Smith was a two-time District 12 champion before heading to the University of Florida on a full grant and aid football scholarship. While at UF, Smith wrestled at the club level and founded the Gainesville Boys Club Wrestling program.

Upon graduating in 1964, Smith returned to northeast PA and started the Hazelton High School wrestling program in 1965. He then transitioned to Wyoming Area High School, where he started a varsity program in 1966, compiling a 19-7 record from 1966-68.

Smith would go on to coach five more seasons from 1968-73 at Abington Heights High School, posting a 56-15 record, leading the program to four Suburban League titles, two District championships while also winning District 12 Coach of the Year.

Outside of the coaching realm, Smith has dedicated over 45 years to the sport of wrestling as an official at both the interscholastic and intercollegiate levels.

From 1986-2013, Smith served as an NCAA wrestling official, refereeing various dual meets within the NCAA Division III setting and also officiating the NCAA Division I East Region in 1998 and 1999.

Smith began officiating within the PIAA in 1974 and has refereed at least one postseason tournament for 40 consecutive seasons, including 12 PIAA state tournaments.

Serving public education for 45 years, Smith worked his way from social studies teacher to Dean of Students to Assistant Principal, Principal and CAO.

Among many other lifetime distinctions, Smith is recognized as a District 2 Lifetime Member for his 25 years of service, a member of the District 2 Tournament Committee, has served as Interpreter, Vice President and President of the Northeast Chapter of Wrestling Officials Charter, and has served as Chairman of the Abington Heights Athletic Committee as well as the Superintendents Student Athletic Advisory Committee.

Smith resides in Clarks Summit, Pa. and is the father of three adult children: Ashley, Peter II and Jason.
