Malcolm Prewitt
Malcolm L. Prewitt III was born in 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee to Peggy and Malcolm Prewitt, Jr. but grew up in Decatur, Alabama. After graduating from Decatur High School, Malcolm earned his first undergraduate and graduate degrees from Auburn University in physical education. Then, while working fulltime, he earned an additional undergraduate and Master’s degree in history from the University of Montevallo.
Coach Prewitt began his teaching and coaching career at Pizitz Middle School in the Vestavia Hills City School system in the fall of 1989. There he taught 7th grade social studies for 32 years, helping young students understand how the past is relevant to our future.
Coach Prewitt’s first encounter with wrestling came that same school year in the late fall. After football season ended, Coach Steve Gaydosh approached him and asked if he would be interested in coaching wrestling. Coach Prewitt responded that his only connection to wrestling was watching it on TV on Saturday mornings growing up. Coach Gaydosh gave him a couple of VHS tapes on wrestling and said, “You will pick it up in no time.” He started coaching the junior varsity team that season as an assistant to Coach Buddy Anderson. That first season with Coach Anderson, Coach Prewitt yelled whatever Coach Anderson said, just louder. The next season, 1990 – 1991, he became the head JV coach. He then transitioned to be the first head coach at Pizitz Middle School. Coach Prewitt was fortunate to work with 1,000 student athletes during his tenure at Pizitz Middle School along with 1,000 sets of parents, many experiencing wrestling for the first time. Coach Prewitt coached with a number of outstanding assistant coaches and had the honor of working under two of the best varsity coaches in Alabama, Steve Gaydosh and Tee Adams.
During his time at Pizitz, Coach Prewitt hosted the first match and the first tournament on the Pizitz campus. He served as the Assistant Director of the AHSAA State Wrestling Tournament when the tournament brought all classifications together at Hanceville for one year and the Pelham Civic Center for 13 years, before the tournament moved to Huntsville.
During his time at Pizitz Middle School, the feeder program for Vestavia Hills High School, Coach Prewitt helped start 48 wrestlers on their quest for individual state championships. He also helped set the course for what would become 14 team state team championships for VHHS.
Malcolm has been married to his wife Amy for almost 35 years. She has been his biggest supporter and the best “unpaid” assistant coach. They have five children: John and his wife Francesca, Patrick and his fiancée Leah, and Will. Coach Prewitt has three grandchildren that he loves spending time with: Luca, Lilah, and Wyatt. Malcolm still attends Vestavia matches and works for his church (Vestavia Hills Methodist Church) as Director of Recreational Ministries.
