Dan Muthler
Dan Muthler graduated from Jersey Shore High School in 1971, wrestling for Hall of Fame Coach, Rodney Laub. While there, Dan won the Sectional, District 4, Northeast Regional and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association State Championships in both his junior and senior years.
He matriculated to the United States Naval Academy, wrestling for another Hall of Famer, Ed Peery. Dan graduated and earned his commission in 1975. While at Navy, he was a two-time Wilkes Open Champ, earning the outstanding wrestler award in one of the years. Dan was an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Champ in 1974, and in 1972, he caught fire and won the NCAA Championship.
He was a US World freestyle team alternate behind Dan Gable, a four-time Inter-Service champ, winning two Freestyle and two Greco-Roman titles. He also was a three-time AAU National Freestyle place winner and a Greco-Roman place winner.
Dan started coaching in 1977 as an assistant at Pensacola High School in Florida. He then was an assistant at Jersey Shore in 1988, and again from 2004 to 2020. Dan then moved on to Lycoming College as an assistant coach in 1989 to 2000. He was also a PIAA wrestling official from 1989 to 1994.
Dan was on active duty in the Marine Corps from June 1975 to November 1987 and an active member of the Pennsylvania National Guard as a helicopter pilot from 1989 to 2013 and has completed 36 ½ years of military service.
Dan always epitomized sportsmanship by respecting one’s opponent, always gracious in winning or losing on the mat. He is fair and generous in his treatment of others. His love for wrestling is contagious and he willingly shares his expertise in that area with anyone who asks. He has been inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association, the West Branch Sports, and the US Naval Academy Halls of Fame. He was honored by the City of Williamsport’s “Walk of Fame” in 2016.
