A native of Jefferson, North Carolina, Bare played baseball, wrestled, and played football at Ashe Central High School. After graduating high school in 1981, Bare attended Elon College where he was a letterman in wrestling and earned a Physical Education degree in 1989. Accepting a job at Northwest Guilford High School in 1989, Bare embarked on a 34-year teaching and coaching career and remains at Northwest today. Bare served as an assistant wrestling coach from 1989 to 1996 before ascending to head coach in 1996. In 27 seasons as head wrestling coach, Bare’s teams have amassed 583 dual meet wins, have captured 21 conference championships, four regional championships, runner-up finishes at the 2015 and 2023 state tournaments, a runner-up dual team finish in 2022, and dual team state championships in 2019 and 2023. Bare has coached 25 regional champions, 58 state place-winners, and nine individual state champions winning 12 state titles. Bare is well-known and respected across the wrestling community for his quiet and unassuming coaching style that is complemented by an impressive work ethic. Bare has been named conference coach of the year 19 times and in 2019 was named the Mat News 4A Coach of the Year. In 2019, Bare also received the NCHSAA’s prestigious “Toby Webb Outstanding Coach Award.” The Toby Webb award is given to just two coaches annually in North Carolina and Bare is the first wrestling coach to receive this award. In addition to coaching wrestling, Bare serves as the physical education department chair at Northwest Guilford and has coached football and golf throughout his career. He currently lives in High Point with his wife Vicki.
