As a freshman in 1988 at Hereford High School, Brett Baier went out for wrestling not knowing what to expect. An accomplished athlete in soccer and baseball, his father convinced him to give wrestling a try in between his other sports. As a beginner, on a strong high school wrestling team, Brett lost every wrestle off match but stuck with it. He became JV captain as a sophomore forming the foundation for two successful years on the varsity. Leading his team as captain during his senior year, Brett was also a county and regional semifinalist and qualified for the state tournament. As fate would have it, Brett’s first teaching job out of college, landed him at Hereford High School. Besides being the work-based learning coordinator, he spent the next twenty four years coaching in the same room where he had ventured in as a freshman. After two years as the JV Coach, Brett was the Head Varsity Coach for seven years and has been the Varsity Assistant since. With so many coaches not teaching onsite, his presence has been paramount to Herford’s success. Brett has promoted wrestling and has recruited many to try wrestling just as he did. His passion, knowledge and dedication to the sport is evident and a major asset to Hereford Wrestling. He has coached eight individual state champions, including four time champion and twice College NCAA All American, Josh Asper. Hereford has an impressive wrestling legacy in Baltimore County and the state of Maryland. During Brett’s tenure, they’ve won multiple team county championships and has been twice in the Dual Meet State Finals. In 2018, Brett was inducted into the Baltimore County Wrestling Hall of Fame and in 2014 was given the prestigious Sportsmanship Award by the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association. Moreover, Brett has always stepped up to accept leadership positions. He has directed the county tournament for the last thirteen years. Administratively, he is the Director of Wrestling in Baltimore County a non-glamourous position which requires many hours of effort. Brett has also coached Boys Soccer, Softball and Allied Bowling. He lives with his wife Kimberly in New Freedom, PA, not far from Hereford High School.
