Ed Schneider
Ed grew up in the Philadelphia area, graduating from Northeast Catholic High School in 1987. He graduated from Temple University in 1992, with degrees in History, Education and Educational Technology. In 1995 he became a high school psychology teacher and wrestling coach at Council Rock South School District, and has remained there until today.
Ed has coached wrestling most of his adult life. He volunteered to coach in the Port Richmond Police Athletic League in 1987, and continues today. Ed was an Assistant Coach at Richboro Jr High 1993-1998, and 26 years as Jr High Coach at Council Rock South. In 1998 he became an Assistant Varsity Coach at Council Rock South, and still continues. Ed has been Beat the Streets Philadelphia Coach from 2009 to present.
Ed is the only coach in the Philadelphia area to have multiple time Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling and Eastern National Champions. These included Joe Galasso, Evan Botwin, Matt O'Neil, Nick O'Neil and Jameel Coles. Every PIAA state qualifier from Philadelphia has wrestled in Ed’s room. Miles Lee, the first PIAA state place winner and Junior Nationals finalist from Beat the Streets Philadelphia trained with Ed throughout the year.
One nominator said, “Ed has made an invaluable contribution to thousands of Philadelphia youth that otherwise would have been subjected to the harsh reality of so many other youths in Philadelphia. Ed is the Godfather of Philadelphia wrestling. He’s been involved with almost every successful wrestler or program in Philadelphia, a major force in helping Beat the Streets Philadelphia grow opportunities for underprivileged youth in the city.”
Chas Pami, University of Penn Assistant Coach said, “Ed is content and satisfied with what he does. He will never get rich helping kids. Money does not motivate this man for 25+ years of coaching. Rather it is his authentic genuine care for the athletes in his wrestling room. Ask anyone who knows Ed and they will tell you he is a hidden gem.”
Ed and his wife Kathleen reside in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. His continuing to live there and coach kids in our great sport reinforces his status to the wrestling family in SE PA. But Ed may be better described as “diamond” for that effort
