Tass Robertson
The word “champion” can have two meanings: one, the winner of a competition; the other refers to someone who fights for a cause or defends others. Tass Robertson of Grundy, VA, is both of these.
The son of F. D. and Bobbie Robertson, Tass was born October 5, 1975, into a distinguished wrestling family and tradition. He was a champion wrestler for the widely respected program of the Grundy HS Golden Wave, part of two nationally ranked teams, twice a member of the Virginia National Team, a Junior Freestyle State Champion, and a Southeast Regional Champion.
As a coach, he led his local teams to many accomplishments at the youth, middle school, and high school levels. He has coached nationally ranked teams and outstanding wrestlers who have won or placed in most of the top wrestling tournaments in the country: Beast of the East, Reno Tournament of Champions, Wildwood Duals, Cadet and Junior Nationals, Tulsa Nationals, Virginia Challenge State Tournament, Virginia Duals, and Easton Duals.
Today, Tass is an administrator, caring for his wrestling community as President of the Grundy Wrestling Club. His management of the program has brought Grundy back to its traditional status as a highly-ranked state power despite a 50 percent decline in enrollment during his tenure. Grundy has sent many wrestlers to events such as Virginia Challenge, USA Wrestling, and the AAU.
Tass considers his greatest accomplishment to be the success of his wrestlers off the mat. Grundy wrestlers have had a 100% high school graduation rate and a 92% higher education rate, going on to proud adulthoods as doctors, lawyers, law enforcers, military personnel (including a Navy SEAL), teachers, coaches, and businessmen. He takes joy in seeing them grow into great fathers, husbands, and productive members of society. He lives the life he teaches, as husband to Kristy Robertson and the proud father of Katie, Tyler, and Jaxon.
