Gordy Smith
Gordy retired from teaching and coaching in 2019. He played football and wrestled at Cornell College. Gordy was a 3x All Midwest Conference Guard, 2x captain and they were conference champions in 1984. Gordy was a conference runner-up at 190 lbs. and was on the team that was conference champions that year.
Gordy’s coaching career was full as JH coach from 1986-2003 along with Head HS coach from 1986-2019. He was also on the Iowa State Greco staff for the 1999-2000 season.
Gordy had seven state finalists and two State Champions, Nate Trees in 1997, and Tyler Nixt in 1999. Nixt went on to be All-American at Iowa at 174 lbs. in 2004. Gordy’s teams were Corn Bowl Conference Champions in ‘96,’97,’98,’99. His team was also champions of the Top Of Iowa Conference in 2018. Gordy has had 269 career dual wins as a coach. Gordy has been and active member of the IWCOA and has been instrumental in guiding the Mat Cats wrestling club at North Butler.
