Wayne Gilman
Wayne wrestled at Stuart Menlo High School and in 1969 was a state qualifier and 1970 he was a 3rd place finisher. Wayne attended UNI graduating in 1974. In 1976 he was a JH coach at Starmont for two years. He then took at job at Stuart Menlo where he was JH and Varsity Assistant coach from 1978-81. In 1981 he became the CO-Head coach at Stuart Menlo/West Central Valley from 1981-1995. At the same time he was JH coach from 1981-93. Wayne gave up the coaching until he was pressed back into service as the head coach in 2005-2006. Again Wayne went back to the JH position from 2012-2014. Wayne took over the helm from 2014-2016 as Head coach again until his retirement from coaching in 2016.
His dual meet record from 1978-1995 was 130-65. Wayne was voted District Coach of the year in the 1994-95 season as his dual meet record was 22-2. Wayne had two State champions in his years- in 1989, Tim O’Brien at 171 lbs. and then in 1991, Chris Swalla at 171 lbs. Wayne had a State Qualifier every year from 1979-1995.
He was and inspiration to many youth in the Stuart-Menlo/West Central Valley school district. He was well known for developing each athlete from the time they walked through the door until they graduated. Many athletes would say he was the most influential coach they ever had. He prided the program in developing the student athlete not only on the mat, but also in the classroom. He tried to instill four things in each student athlete- Trust the Process, Be Humble, Work Ethic, and Mental Toughness.
Wayne coached 42 State Qualifiers, Fifteen place-winners, two runner-ups and two State Champion
