Thomas Deaguero (Tom)
"Our collaborative environment breaks perceived cultural barriers through rigorous learning and foundation skills that scholars
need to spark their intelligence, ignite their imaginations, and expand their opportunities to become college, career, and
community ready."
Everyone sees that mission statement as they enter the doors of Adams City High School. And, in true form, Tom Deaguero
has carried out that mission statement.
Wrestling under Coach Jim Sanford and assistant Coach Steve Campos, Deaguero was able to learn from two of the best. And,
like everything else in life, this took patience, grit, and time. After he graduated from Adams City High School in 1975, Deaguero
attended Northeastern Junior College where he injured his knee, which required surgery. Because of this setback, Deaguero
was not able to return to complete his schooling at that time.
Instead, he began working in construction and helping coach the Kearney Middle School wrestling team, while also becoming
involved with the Wildfire, Renegade and Adams City wrestling clubs. Deaguero was one of the founding members of the Adams
City Wrestling Club in 1983, along with Rick Sanchez, who at that time was the Athletic Director of Adams City High School.
These experiences convinced him it was time to go back to school and get that college education.
With the support of his wife, Sharon, and the encouragement of his good friend Rick Sanchez, Tom enrolled at Metropolitan
State College in 1986 and graduated in 1991 with a degree in mathematics. Ron Montoya, the Director of Human Resources,
offered Tom a job in the Adams City School District, and Principal Tom Budde wasted no time in hiring Tom to teach math at
Adams City.
Thus, the Deaguero legacy began. He worked as the Eagles' assistant coach under head coach Steve Campos until 1995,
when he took over the job of Adams City High School head wrestling coach. Just a few names of wrestlers who excelled under
Deaguero's coaching include Jared Deaguero, a two time state champion and one time Division II National Champion; Joey
Deaguero, a three time state champion and four time Division II All American; Judge Sam Vigil, a state champion and National
Freestyle Champion; and Jeff Mueller, Nestor Pino, and Fabian Gutierrez—all Colorado state champions.
Along with Sharon and the rest of his family, Tom helped prepare many young people for the future. Tom has always said, "It is
more gratifying to work with kids than it is with adults."
Deaguero led the wrestling program at Adams City High School for nearly three decades and, over the last 50 years, instances
where a Deaguero wasn't representing the family at ACHS are few and far between. The Deaguero name is synonymous with
Commerce City excellence, both on and off the mat. He is currently the principal of Lester Arnold High School in Adams County
District 14, helping both students and staff become successful.
