Cameron Urias
Cameron Urias is the Medal of Courage honoree for the Iowa Chapter. He wrestled for coach Bill Reed at Newton High School. He showed great work ethic, and perseverance to be the best he could be. Wrestling for Cameron has always been a challenge. His sophomore year he missed much of the season with mono. His work in his off season is what determined his return his junior and senior season in top condition. His senior season Cameron wrestled at 215 despite only being 200lbs. During the State Tournament of 2004, he weighed in at 187lbs for the 215 lb class and battled in every match. His 5th place match he was on his back for over one and a half minutes before he came back in the next period and pinned his opponent. That sums up Cameron's pre adult life, never give up.
After graduation, Cameron joined the marines, where he served for 5 years, and did three tours to Iraq. Cameron continues to deal with the mental images of war today. He risked his life to save a fellow marine who had been shot, Cameron rescued him under heavy enemy fire. Cameron receives 80% disability from the US government because he has PTSD, loss of hearing, suffers from tinnitus due to the blasts from the bombs and gun fire. He has scars from shrapnel all over his body. He was also a martial arts instructor for the marines. In visiting with Cameron coach Bill Reed said the one thing that comes clear without his involvement in wrestling he never would have been the marine that he was. He was willing to share some of his recognitions for fighting in battle, but the most important thing he wanted to share is that wrestling taught him how to be a fierce competitor
Cameron makes his home today in Coeurd'alene, Id. He has a BS Enviromental Science, Fish and Game, he and his wife Shira have two children, Joe born in 2016 and Jane born in 2018. They are independent farmers in Idaho
