Bruce Ennen

Bruce Ennen wrestled at Gilmore City-Bradgate and wrestled in the IHSAA State Tournament in 1973 but did not place. He wanted to continue with his involvement in the sport after high school, so he decided to get involved in officiating. His goal was to work state championship matches and he attained that several rimes throughout his career. Bruce comments that officiating was long, tiring, lonely and often demoralizing. Many nights he came home after being publicly yelled at by coaches, crowds, and even wrestlers. He stuck with it and decided that he wanted to become an expert at the rules so he sought mentors like Don Miller and Marv Reiland to help him. His struggles of becoming a good referee were also hampered by going broke in farming and starting college at the age of 32 and graduating from Veterinary School at the age of 39 with a family. He then started a new business, survived a car accident and fought through Lyme Disease. Bruce believes his success is best described by JohnA Passaro in "The Pursuit" where he describes the process of setting a goal and overcoming obstacles. The agony of learning, making adjustments and sacrifice, are what makes us who we are, and not the award waiting at the end. Digging down and doing everything you can to prepare, will sometimes be enough and sometimes not. Bruce feels the pursuit is his proudest moment.
