Will Schenerlein

Will "Scheny" Schenerlein is a graduate of Parkersburg High School in 1991.

While wrestling under the tutelage of Joe Handlan and assistant Dave Hill, Scheny was a member of the 1989 state championship team and an All-State wrestler in 1991 in the 160-pound weight class.

In 1991, Scheny joined The Parkersburg YMCA Cougar Wrestling Club as an assistant coach under 2018 HOF inductee, Mike Litton.

After graduation from West Liberty State College in 1996 he was hired by fellow 2019 HOF inductee Geno Monteleone as an assistant at Wheeling Park H.S. The following year he returned home to coach at his beloved alma mater, Parkersburg High School.

Scheny considers himself to be very lucky to have had the opportunity to grow up in Parkersburg and to have been guided by coaches Mike Litton, Dave. Hill and especially Joe Handlan, a 2005 HOF inductee. To be coached by these men and then have the opportunity to learn the coaching craft from Handlan, the greatest coach in the world as far as Scheny is concerned, was definitely the highlight of his wrestling career.

Scheny was fortunate to have an outstanding group of assistant coaches over the years and he believes they are receiving this award as well, it was a team effort - Dave Satterfield, Jason Marks, Dave Koreski, Tom Brock, Chris Way, Steve Rader, Tony Dickens, Aaron Schetter, Troy Owens & Rick Parks. Scheny and his assistants were fortunate to have outstanding administration during their time at PHS. Ralph Board & Richard Lance, but especially Bill Niday & 2015 HOF Inductee, Jim Hamric. Without the support of Jim & Bill, PHS wrestling would not have reached the heights or achieved the goals that were set for their wrestlers.

One will always remember Scheny's enthusiasm and fire for the sport of wrestling and especially for the wrestlers he coached. Four WV team championships, five nationally ranked teams, 25 individual state champions, 14 All-Americans, three national champions, four Dutton Award winners, three outstanding wrestler award winners, two NCAA All-Americans & many state place-winners.

Scheny was honored to receive the Rod Oldham AAA Wrestling Coach of The Year Award three times, as well as The West Virginia Sportswriters Coach of The Year Award & USA Wrestling National Coach of The Year Award.

Scheny and his wife Kristen reside in Longboat Key, Florida where he is the founder of The Anna Maria Island Wrestling Club & current head coach of the boys and girls wrestling program at Cardinal Mooney Catholic H.S. in Sarasota, FL.

He and Kristen have four children, Harrison, Madeline, Rea and Bodie.
