Stephen Jackowski

June 01, 1934 - October 23, 2023

From 1960 to 1983, Stephen Jackowski built and ran a winning program at South Jefferson Central School in Adams, New York.

His teams captured Section III championships in 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1979. They were Ontario League and Frontier League champions seven times and runners-up 11 times. They were league tournament champions five times and runners-up four times. They also won their share of invitational team tournament championships. One hundred thirty eight of his wrestlers won individual tournament championships, and 15 earned Outstanding Wrestler honors. Jackowski's dual meet record is 269-45-2.

Coach Jackowski also gave generously of his time and efforts to improve and promote wrestling. He was instrumental in the development of the A, B, C, and D classification system in Section III. He served as chairman of the Frontier League for a number of years. He was president of the Watertown Wrestling Officials Association. He spent 14 years as a Section III committee member. He also served as the Section III Class C Tournament Director for several years.

He has taken his coaching talents on the road by serving as a feature clinician at Medalist Camps held at St. Lawrence University, East Carolina University and the Adirondack Sports Camp. He was the Director of a Cultural Exchange Meet between the United States and Poland held at Watertown High School.

Jackowski has had articles published in Scholastic Wrestling and Amateur Wrestling News. He received a Certificate of National Achievement from Scholastic Wrestling News when he coached his 100th win many years ago. Since then, he has received the New York State Honor Award in 1980, a Section III Service Award in 1982, induction into the Section III Hall of Fame in 1989, and the Frontier League Meritorious Service Award, also in 1989. In 1981 Coach Jackowski was honored by the National High School Athletic Association with its Coach of the Year Award, District I.

Like all good coaches, Coach Jackowski really measures his success by the accomplishments of his athletes. His teams produced 35 Frontier League individual champions, 29 class champions, and six state championship place finishers. Dale Porter went on to wrestle for Cornell University, winning an Eastern Intercollegiate title and earning All-American honors at the NCAA Division I Championships with a sixth-place finish in 1975. Rick Roberts was an NCAA Division III national champion and a New York State Collegiate champion for St. Lawrence University in 1980.

Coach Jackowski has enjoyed the support of his wife Dianne for 30 years. He has two sons, Stephen and David, each of whom wrestled for him and earned class championships in 1981 and 1983, respectively.

It should be mentioned that Coach Jackowski ventured into Division I collegiate wrestling during the 1970-1971 season when he served as assistant coach at East Carolina University, which won the North Carolina State Championship that season.
