Dominick Iacovazzi

Dom Iacovazzi is one of those people whose contributions to wrestling fly under the radar, going largely unknown and unappreciated - except by those who have worked with him. What he exemplifies, however, is the dedication to the sport, and to the kids, that makes wrestling successful. Dom is one of the many who was mentored by Bill Layton who coached Dom in high school. Dom, like others, found Bill Layton always ready to listen and help over the years. In 1968, Dom began his career in teaching at Union-Endicott High School as a teacher of Earth Sciences. After 37 years, he is still teaching there. He married Maljorie, now a retired pre-school teacher, in 1967. Their daughter, Nicole, is now an elementary school principal in Whitney Point, NY. Because he loved wrestling and because he loved working with kids, Dom signed on as a coach at the modified level at Jenny F. Snapp Junior High School the same year he began teaching. He continued to coach kids at Harold Brink Elementary and at Jenny F. Snapp Junior High until 1975. In 1975, Dom became the Assistant Varsity and Junior Varsity coach at Union-Endicott High School. He has been doing that ever since (except for one season off for a sanity check), and he has enjoyed great success at it. Any good high school wrestling coach will admit that a priceless part of a successful program is the development of young wrestlers in the area. Pee-wees, kids' clubs, modified programs and good junior varsity teams are essential. Dom has been involved in all of these. For many years, Dom was assistant coach to Frank Sorochinsky, a previous Hall inductee, and thus worked with several state-ranked teams. He made real contributions to the success of several state champions and place winners, including Dylan Urban, Mike Morlino, Jim Materese and Isaiah Kacyvenski, all from the undefeated 1996 team which Dom remembers fondly, and Jon and Arthur Jones from recent teams. His success as a Junior Varsity coach is well known in Section 4. He has coached many league JV championship teams and individual champions. For more than twenty years Dom has run the JV team tournament at the UE Duals Tournament each year. And he has served as League JV Chairman for so long that he doesn't really know when he assumed that post. His JV teams' 1976-2004 record is a very impressive 255-81-4. Dom was recognized for his 25 years of coaching and service by an award in 1993. The Southern Tier Wrestling Coaches Association presented him with its Assistant Coaching Award in 1996. His rapport with his students is legendary at Union-Endicott. And his value to wrestling is no longer flying under the radar.
