Thirteen of his teams had top ten finishes in NCAA Championships; four of them finished in the top four. He was named New York State Collegiate Coach of the Year in 1978, and he was recognized as NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in 1988. St. Lawrence is John's alma mater. He earned a BS in Psychology there in 1969, then a BA in Physical Education and an MA in Education in 1972. Upon his retirement from coaching at SLU, he took on the duties of Athletic Director there for seven years and managed an athletic program that included 26 intercollegiate sports. After that, he worked in SLU's Development Office helping to induce and structure major gifts to the University. John is the founder and publisher of Empire Wrestling News, the amateur wrestling newspaper for New York high schools and colleges, now approaching its thirtieth anniversary. He served as president of the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Coaches Association from 1978 to 1980 and as president of the NYS Wrestling Coaches Association from 1980 to 1982. John and Donna Clark were married in 1969. They have raised seven children and have, at last count, seven grandchildren. The three Clark sons have excelled as wrestlers at high school and at Ohio State University where Mitch, the oldest, now serves as assistant coach. In 1998 Mitch was the NCAA Division I Champion at 177 pounds. Middle brother John is a two-time Big Ten Champion and a two-time NCAA All-American. Youngest Charlie was a National Prep School Champion at Blair Academy and has matriculated at OSU. In February of 2003, John was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After surgery he became a spokesperson on cancer survival. He exemplifies the active life survivors can lead. In May and June of 2004, John rowed a sea kayak some 900 miles down the St. Lawrence River... alone. John says the trip helped him learn to "maximize the journey." For the last four years John has coached high school wrestlers at Canton High School. Donna and he also lead a non-denominational Christian Church in the Canton area.
