Morrie Geselter

Lifetime Service Morrie has been a mainstay in Illinois wrestling for the past 38 years. Having graduated from a high school which lacked a wrestling program, Morrie's initial contact with the sport came from his experiences at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. In 1967 he and his good friend Ron Silverstein started coaching wrestling at the East Maine Junior High in Park Ridge. Morrie then moved to Maine East High School in 1970 as an assistant coach; in 1980 he assumed the head coaching position. In that same season Morrie coached Maine East's Glenn Olsen (138 lbs.) to a State Championship. Unfortunately, Morrie's administrative responsibilities precluded him from holding the Head Coach position for more than one year. In 1995 Morrie moved to Highland Park High School and, once again, assumed the head coaching position. Morrie retired from teaching in 2000 "” but not from coaching. In 2002 Morrie returned to assist in the wrestling program at, where else, Maine East. In his coaching career Morrie Geselter has influenced and directed the careers of some of Illinois's most accomplished wrestlers. Among those Morrie has coached are: Olympians Kevin Bracken and Joe Williams; NCAA Champions Steve Marianetti and Joe Williams; IHSA State Champions Mejo Hernandez, Glenn Olsen and David Martinez. Having spent most of his high school coaching years as an assistant, Morrie didn't gain the recognition due him; this was not the case during the summertime. Morrie spent most of his summers coaching the Illinois Greco- Roman Junior National Team. From 1981 to 1983 he was an assistant; beginning in 1984 he was named the Head Greco Coach "” a post he held through 1999. During his tenure as Head Greco Coach Team Illinois crowned 21 Greco National Champions along with 145 placewinners. In addition to the individual success, Team Illinois was crowned National Greco Champions eight times during Morrie's coaching tenure. In 1993 Morrie was selected as the Northern Plains Coach-of-the-Year and in the same year USA Wrestling selected Morrie as the National Developmental Coach-of-the-Year. But Morrie's contributions extend beyond the realm of coaching; Morrie is also an accomplished mat official. He has been selected to officiate at Northwestern dual meets; five Midlands; all but one Open Nationals; Junior World Trials; Central Juniors, Espoir Nationals, Cadet Nationals, Junior Nationals; University Nationals; World Team Trials; and Final Olympic Qualifier "” plus a seemingly endless list of lesser events. Since 1993 Morrie has held a USA IE official's rating. In 1993 and 1995 Morrie was designated as the Head Coach of the World Cadet Teams "” an honor Morrie cherishes a great deal. Finally, in 1993 Morrie, for all of his many contributions, was inducted into the IWCOA Hall of Fame; in 2005 Morrie was selected as a Grand Marshall for the IHSA State Finals in Champaign.
